About Carl André

Teaching

I am responsible for the course Statistics and experimental design 7.5 ECTS each semester, and teach regularly Fish Ecology and Marine Conservation Biology.

Research

I use molecular methods to address questions in marine ecology and evolution. My research focus on three different, but partly connected, research areas:

Population structure and local adaptation in marine fish and shellfish

We use genetic markers to study population structure in several commercially important species: cod, herring, sprat, lobster and the shrimp Pandalus borealis.

Ecotype formation and incipient speciation in littorinid snails

Shore snails exhibit remarkable variation in shell shape, physiology and behavioural repertoire, and form genetically distinct ecotypes in different microhabitats. These characteristics constitutes an excellent model system for studying the genetic basis for ecological adaptation and speciation. We have constructed EST libraries for Littorina saxatilis to i) identify genomic regions under selection, ii) study gene expression using micro arrays iii) to elucidate how genes associated with microhabitat ecotype evolve in relation to different models of parallel evolution (see Johannesson et al. 2010).

Adaptation to changing marine environments

Within the Linneaus Centre for Marine Evolutionary Biology and the BONUS funded project Baltgene, we use the Baltic Sea as a test case to study species adaptations to varying environmental conditions.
