About Karen Assmann

My research focuses on high latitude physical oceanography with a particular interest in ice-ocean interaction and shelf break processes. Currently I am working on the transport of warm Circumpolar Deep Water towards the rapidly melting ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea, but have also investigated sea ice formation in this area and the factors affecting the interannual variability of dense shelf water formation in the Ross Sea and how the seasonal cycle on the shelf affects melting in this cavity. In addition I am interested in the physical controls on marine biogeochemistry and have worked the ocean carbon cycle, in particular in the North Atlantic. On-going work investigates the presence of mercury in the Southern Ocean and nutrient and carbon transport into the Arctic from the Pacific through Herald Canyon.
