My research

My research focuses on seaweed-bacterial interactions and how bacterially produced chemicals aid in the completion of the life cycle of Porphyra umbilicalis and Ulva lactuca.

Macroalage, or seaweeds, have been cultivated for many centuries and their application ranges from human consumptions, cosmetics, agar production and biofuel production. In nature, they supply energy required to support diverse coastal marine life for invertebrates and fish. Hence, they are economically, socially and environmentally very important. While seaweed cultivation has been an integrated part of society and research in Asia for many years, it is still in its infancy in the Western world. My research is focused on optimizing the cultivation of Porphyra umbilicalis, a red seaweed, and Ulva lactuca, a green seaweed. First, abiotic factors such as photoperiod, light and temperature will be tested for their impact on growths and induction of reproduction of both species. Second, once optimal abiotic culture conditions have been developed, I will test the impact the impact of epiphytic bacteria on the completion on the seaweeds life cycle. During those studies, the focus will lie on detection and quantification of bacterially mediated growths substances and bacterial communication signals that have shown to impact spore release and facilitates net settlement of spores.

My research questions include: Can epiphytic bacteria significantly contribute to the cultivation of red and green seaweeds? What is the microbial phylogenetic and functional diversity on the seaweed? Are there other bacterially produced substances involved during spore release?
