The University of Gothenburg has extensive marine and maritime operations, in which the marine sciences are the dominant field. This is also one of the university’s most important profile areas.
In order to increase the visibility of marine sciences and to develop opportunities for collaboration within the university, the Department of Marine Sciences was formed on 1 July.
The department’s vision is to be a national leader and to carry out activities of the highest international class within the field of marine sciences. Its operations are interdisciplinary in nature and involve both other departments at the Faculty of Science and other University of Gothenburg faculties, as well as other educational institutions in Sweden and worldwide. By working together with research colleagues from other scientific disciplines, the department will also be able to take on the big global challenges.
The Department of Marine Sciences works closely with the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Infrastructure, the University of Gothenburg’s marine infrastructure unit. The centre is in a class of its own, with the two field stations Tjärnö and Kristineberg, and several small and one large research vessels where teaching, research and social cooperation are carried out in an integrated manner.
There will soon also be new opportunities for research and teaching at the University of Gothenburg, with a new research vessel replacing the existing Skagerak.
