As a PhD student in Marine Ecology, I am going to isolate, revive and cultivate resting spores of the diatom Skeletonema marinoi from dated layers of sediment cores from two fjords. From these natural archives, the revived S.marinoi cells from different ages (0-100 years) will be genotyped in an attempt to discover genetic differentiation patterns among populations. The aim of this project is to establish how adaptations to human induced environmental changes affect the genome and the phenotypic traits linked to these genomic regions. We hope to find a strong phenotypic-genotypic link and get a better understanding for microevolution.

In order to phenotype a large number of strains we have evaluated a high troughput screening method, where we culture strains of S.marinoi in microplates. This method facilitates the measurement of growth rates as we can screen a large number of strains by OD and flourescence in a plate reader. 

We have also done studies where we induce resting stages to cultures in order to see how we can utilize this natural behaviour and to investigate what accutally happends during the resting phase.
