About Therese Karlsson

Within my PhD I am investigating sources, pathways, and fate of microlitter in the marine environment. The project incorporates method development, field measurements, modelling and experimental studies to better understand how microlitter, especially microplastic, travels in the environment.

To better understand sources and fate of plastic particles I work with vibrational spectroscopy, such as Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), to identify plastic types and investigate molecular changes in the polymers. I also work with scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy to better understand the composition of anthropogenic particles in different parts of the oceans.

Through my research I am involved in several different projects about plastics. One of the projects is the Interregproject Ren Kustlinje (Clean Coastline), where scientists, municipalities and stakeholders work with the issue of marine litter, focusing on the Skagerrak-Kattegatt area http://www.renkustlinje.se/

I am passionate about environmental protection and sustainability and I am especially interested in how our current consumption patterns affect the environment. In that I want to contribute through connecting the dots between different fields of study. Therefore interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary projects are particularly interesting. Send me an email if you want to discuss plastics, marine protection, sailing and/or potential future cooperation.

Teaching
I am the courseleader for the net-based course Pollution in the marine environment (BIO027) and I am a teaching assistant at Ecology and evolution (BIO915).
I have organized workshops on visual identificaiton of plastic particles and I have supervised and co-supervised several interns and students during their project works.
