Become a doctoral student in marine sciences

The University of Gothenburg is the leading university in Sweden for studies in the marine sciences. Most of the marine research is conducted at the Faculty of Science.

Members of the Faculty are not only engaged in a number of marine research projects on for example changes in the marine environment and biological diversity; they are also coordinating several international collaborations linked to marine environments. One-fourth of the research and third-cycle studies at the Faculty concerns marine issues.

The University of Gothenburg hosts the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment and the Faculty of Science is strongly established at the forefront of marine research.

Admission requirements

To be eligible to do doctoral studies at the University of Gothenburg, you must satisfy both general and special entry requirements. To meet the general requirements for admission to third-cycle education, applicants must have:

  1. been awarded a second-cycle degree, or
  2. completed course requirements for at least 240 higher education credits, including 60 HEC awarded in the second cycle, or
  3. acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
