GU initiates external investigation regarding new Skagerak

News: Sep 23, 2019

The construction of the University of Gothenburg's new research vessel Skagerak is delayed. Vice-Chancellor Eva Wiberg has therefore initiated an external investigation to provide recommendations on how the situation can be resolved.

The new Skagerak should have been operational several years ago, but is still at the quay at the Polish shipyard Nauta. It is unclear when work on the vessel will be completed and what challenges the construction project has to deal with.

“It is frustrating to be in this situation. I have therefore, in consultation with the Faculty of Science and the University Board, on September 11, taken the initiative to let an external investigation find out which alternatives we have and come up with proposals on a way forward,” says Vice-Chancellor Eva Wiberg.

The investigation will assess possible options for action, such as having the shipyard complete the construction, canceling the contract or allow the University to take over the ship in its existing condition. The investigation will also assess circumstances linked to, among other things, technology, economics and the law. The report is to be presented during 2019.

Work on the vessel continues

Work on the vessel is continuing during the fall. Right now the shipyard is, together with the University, trying to find a new subcontractor for the control system. A new project manager for the construction of the ship will also be recruited, as the current project manager's ordinance expires on October 31.

“We will now review which competence we need for the final part of the project, which includes functioning propulsion, sea tests and delivery,” says Göran Hilmersson, chairman of the steering committee for the construction of the vessel and Dean of the Faculty of Science.
