New Master's Programme arouses great interest

News: May 11, 2019

This September starts the new interdisciplinary Master's Programme about the sea and society.

  • The interest from students has been fantastic - in total 338 students have applied for the new program (almost 2/3 have been international students)! It therefore looks very promising to fill all the four compulsory courses the first year with students.
  • The development of the first course MAR461 (The sea and society relationship; historical perspectives, present status and future challenges) is almost completed and it will start as planned in September.
  • The second and the third course MAR462 (Blue economy and sustainable use of marine resources) and MAR460 (European marine directives and policies - an interdisicplinary perspective) were carried out successfully this winter as individually courses. The students seemed very happy with the courses and gave them good course evaluations.
  • The fourth course MAR463 (≈ The spatial dimensions of marine ecosystems and their governance) is under development and will be given in the spring 2020 for the first time
  • We are presently around 40 teachers from 12 departments and 5 faculties at GU collaborating on the program courses + teachers from Chalmers and SLU
  • Several national marine authorities, including the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (HaV) and the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) are very supportive about the new program and are contributing with lectures to the courses, and are positive about receiving interns and master thesis students to their agencies.
