Om Alyssa Joyce

Alyssa Joyce has worked internationally in a wide range of research and industrial facilities on projects aimed at addressing challenges in aquaculture production, specifically raising, harvesting and handling seafood safely and profitably. Her group currently focuses on a wide range of production issues including:

• Marine technologies for offshore, intertidal and recirculating aquaculture
• Live-feed production and hatchery technology
• Developmental physiology of fish and molluscs
• Antibacterial resistance and targeted drug delivery for pathogen control in aquaculture
• Re-utilization of sludge waste in aquaponics

Current PhD students and postdocs in Dr. Joyce’s lab are working on:

• Physiology and selective breeding in hatchery production
• Probiotics and reducing use of antibiotics (antimicrobial resistance) in fish farming
• Microalgal-bacterial exopolymers in hatchery production, and algal quality for optimizing live larval feeds
• Neuroendocrine control of settlement and metamorphosis in bivalves for hatchery applications
• Fish recirculating aquaculture systems with hydroponic plant production (aquaponics)
• Role of vitamins in bivalve metabolism

Alyssa and her team have long-term collaborations with labs in the UK, Europe, Canada, USA and Australia. With funding from VR-SIDA, they are also working in South East Asia, South America and the South Pacific.
